Joburg

Have to be quick, cause internet time is very limited. I have so much to say about South Africa, I don't even know where to begin. And many photos to post--but that will have to wait for a cheaper web cafe. It's been a moving, utterly overwhelming, life-changing experience. Thirty hours of travel, a huge party at a Joburg hot spot the first night here with hip-hop artists from all over the continent. Then yesterday workshops, heated debates, freestyle forums, and meals. A panel on war affected youth in Africa, where rapper Emmanuel Jal told his story of being a child soldier. Not a dry eye in the house. A huge fancy gala last night hosted by the Ministry of Tourism, held in an old fort that looked out over the city. Baggy jeans and ball caps and United Nations suits all together. A performance from Tumi & The Volume. Today: more panels and a huge concert in New Town park. Sunday off to the townships for Black Sunday, a weekly outdoor hip-hop show in Soweto.

There are no words to express what I am feeling right now. This country is so powerful and so beautiful, I am continually moved to tears.
