The City
"When they fall in love with a city, it is for forever, and it is like forever. As though there never was a time when they didn't love it. The minute they arrive...they know they are born for it. There, in a city, they are not so much new as themselves: their stronger, riskier selves."
-Toni Morrison, Jazz
Had a Sex In The City-style breakfast gabathon this morn with friends, and it got me thinking about New York (as if I ever stop). So NYC theme this morn on Global Beat...
NYC choreographer Tanisha Scott is tackling sexism, one music video at a time. Tangent: did I mention that I trained in dance for over a decade? I did. Ballet, jazz, and modern dance. Which means that my style is equal parts wooden (think bunhead), cheesy (think jazz hands), and weird (think floor improvs set to bizarre string music). One time I did backup dancing for a Weird Al concert. Bet you didn't need to know that. Anyway, I was reminded of all this the other day when I took a hip-hop dance class at my gym. I felt, as I always do at hip-hop classes, like a giant nerd. I do alright on the dance floor at the club (and by that I mean I move like Shakira hyped on Red Bulls), but put me in a fast-paced hip-hop class and I tend to flop around and embarrass myself. However, it was nice to finally dance to music I actually like (we did a routine to Akon's "Belly Dancer"). Somehow, it all reminded of my favorite performance ever, the Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre doing Donald Byrd's Dance at the Gym.
The ultimate New York mythology: Rent or The Warriors? Obviously, I vote The Warriors.
The New York Post's Page Six reports that Kate Moss and Lindsay Lohan performed a drunken pole dance at an Upper East Side strip bar. Scandalous.
