The Surreal Life
Wow. Stephen Harper is the Prime Minister of Canada. WTF?????
For all of you out there that don't know what that means, let me break it down. Harper is basically the Canadian version of Bush. He is pro-war, anti-abortion, and anti-same sex marriage. He wants to axe our universal health care and increase tax cuts to the rich. About as right-wing as they come. Obviously I didn't vote for him, but apparently a lot of my country did. Well, actually a lot of people voted NDP and Liberal, but it split the opposing vote and Harper squeezed through with a Minority Government.
The mood here in Van City is somber. This city is fairly liberal, and pretty much everyone I know votes federally for the New Democratic Party or for the Liberal Party (there's a big difference between the federal Liberal Party and the not-liberal-at-all B.C. Liberal Party). I know a couple people that vote Green and one or two that vote Marijuana Party (but, as my bro says, can't see why anyone would want a bunch of stoned hippies running things).
But I do not know a single soul that votes Conservative. And now the party has gone and taken over the country. Was at the gym this morn and everyone was watching the news coverage and shaking their heads. Who are these people? Everyone kept asking each other that.
I think what happened is that Harper romanced the rural vote, which appears to be ultra-conservative, religious, and totally out of touch with the values of the rest of the country. Sound familiar?
